Broadway Showstoppers enliven musicale hits
Resorts World Manila is filling up the huge stage of the Newport Performing Arts Theater with an assemblage of the most notable musical characters. In one night we'll see Mary Magdalene of "Jesus Christ Superstar", Sheila Franklin from "Hair", Maria of "West Side Story", Mimi from "Rent", Aida from the musical of the same title, Vanessa from "In The Heights", Freddie Trumper in "Chess", Jean Valjean and Fantine in "Les Miserables" and the Engineer and Kim in "Miss Saigon".
Sounds like a lot of people but the truth, three people are enough to perform these acts. Collectively, they are the Broadway Showstoppers.
The finest Filipino talents from the west end come home to delight the local audience with the continuation of Resorts World Manila’s Concert Series. Broadway’s talent authority Leo Valdez is joined by guest performers and fellow international broadway superstars Joanna Ampil and Ima Castro. Altogether with another set of world-class performers Primo and the Opera Belles, they will sing songs performed by our most loved stage characters. Freddie Santos completes the concert’s ensemble by taking charge of the direction.
Left to Right: Joanna Ampil, Leo Valdez and Ima Castro as they graciously answer questions from the press
As if their prolific resume’ and positive critic reviews of their performances from all over the world are not enough, Leo Valdez and his guests performed for the members of the media during their press conference held at The Terrace, Maxims Tower last September 8, 2011. Leo sang “The Impossible Dream (The Quest)” from the musical “The Man of La Mancha” while Joanna sang “I Don’t Know How Love Him”, a song from “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Ima, on the other hand, belted “And I’m Telling You (I’m Not Going)” from “Dreamgirls”.
No stranger to huge stages as they performed in large concert halls across London, Australia and other parts of the globe, Ima still expressed unease when asked for reactions about the state of the art Newport Performing Arts Theater. “It’s massive… and scary actually”, she said. “I am overwhelmed with the theater. Everything is new… Refreshing”, Joanna, on the other hand, shared.
Listen to broadway hits as they are sang the best way they can be in Broadway Showstoppers on September 27, 8:00 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
